Founded in 1968, Arc 1600 became a place where a true pioneering spirit could flourish. Driven by great creative freedom, architects and designers experimented and invented a new way of thinking about and experiencing mountain life.
Description
At Arc 1600, the mountain presents its own challenges, but also opens up a world of possibilities. Slopes, terrain, climate, landscape… all factors that encouraged the designers to experiment and invent new ways of building at altitude.
Charlotte Perriand, Guy Rey-Millet, Gaston Regairaz, Bernard Taillefer and Pierre Faucheux shared a common ambition: to create a resort in harmony with its surroundings, designed with the people who live there in mind.
Working with the slope rather than flattening it, preserving the natural terrain and vegetation, opening terraces onto the landscape, avoiding overlooking neighbouring buildings, designing spaces on a human scale… This guided tour reveals the design principles that shaped Arc 1600 and offers a deeper understanding of an architecture where every detail has a purpose.
An architectural heritage recognised by the French Ministry of Culture with the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” (Remarkable Contemporary Architecture) label.
